FedEx misdelivered a highly valuable package

employment attorney Florida Aug 25, 2026
Location: Central Florida I am trying to determine the proper steps to take in dealing with a misdelivered package of substantial value. Recently, a package containing a significant amount of computer components was misdelivered to my place of employment by FedEx. The shipping label had my employers address on it and was addressed to my boss, but the label indicates that the package was relabeled at some point. We assume that the original packaging or label was damaged in transit and when the package was relabeled, it received the wrong label. Here's the kicker, the shipping label has no return address, and there is no packing list or identifying information in the package itself. We reached out to FedEx in an attempt to find the owner, but as there was no return information, FedEx was unable to locate the owner or accept the package as a return. We are now trying to determine what the next steps should be. I did a little research and from what I can see, I should reach out to my local Sheriff's office to file a Found Property Report under Florida statute 705.102. We plan to claim the contents of the package if the rightful owner is not located. I just wanted to ensure that I am taking the correct path and that there is nothing that I've missed in my internet research. Any tips would be appreciated!
