Elissa Bercovitz

Firm: Bercovitz Law Firm, PC
2373 Central Park Blvd. , Denver , Colorado 80238
Practice Areas: Education , Divorce & Separation, Divorce & Separation
A native New Yorker, I was born and raised in New York (Queens and Long Island), before falling in love with Colorado and moving here over ten years ago. I am a 1990 graduate of the State University of New York at Albany, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. After three years of working as a paralegal in a major law firm in New York City, I decided to make the leap and enroll in law school. I received my Juris Doctor in 1996 from the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Long Island, New York. During law school, I focused on gaining practical experience through participation in internships and clinics. I was a summer intern at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office where I became familiar with the inner workings of the criminal justice system. During my second year of law school I participated in the Mental Health Disability Law Clinic, and gained valuable insight while working on cases, many of which were class action law suits against New York State. This clinic has been a leading force in the movement to provide protection and advocacy for those who have been diagnosed as mentally ill. After the completion of the clinic, I continued to work with the professor over the summer in a paid summer internship position. This clinic experience provided me a sense of how I could be a positive force, as an attorney, in the lives of clients who are unable to advocate for themselves through a complex legal system. My first introduction to domestic relations law was through the participation in a semester long Family Law Clinic in 1995. In addition to being exposed to the divorce process and the many issues attendant to a dissolution of marriage, I represented individuals who were the victims of domestic violence by assisting them in obtaining a protection orders from the court. Upon graduation from law school, I worked for the Suffolk County Legal Aid Society as a criminal defense attorney where I was thrown into the courtroom environment and forced to sink or swim. I quickly learned to overcome any fears I had of working in a field of law that requires me to appear in court. I decided to take my time and explore different facets of the practice of law, and decided to shift gears by taking a job in the corporate environment. In this position, I learned quite a bit about the discovery process in large civil litigation cases. I also realized at that point that I did not want to continue representing the faceless corporate client and that I longed to connect with my clients on a much deeper level. I felt that my interpersonal skills and ability to connect with people was not being maximized in the corporate context. I’ve found that the perfect fit for my skills is through the representation of litigants in family law. This field of law also hits home for me, having experienced the divorce of my own parents as a young child. My personal background enhances my ability to relate to my clients, and this makes me uniquely qualified as a lawyer in this field of practice. I am very sensitive to the impact this process has on the family, especially the children, as a child of divorce myself. I make it a point to keep my clients focused on their children and how their decisions and actions throughout the course of their case will impact their children. Whenever possible, it is my goal to move my clients toward resolution outside the courtroom, as this almost always results in the least detrimental effect upon the family. However, there are situations when the parties simply cannot resolve an issue, and, in that case, I am fully prepared to represent my client’s interests in the courtroom setting. I volunteered my time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Denver CASA, an organization that strives to protect children and be a voice for their best interests within the juvenile justice system. While I miss my home state of New York at times, I enjoy living in Denver with my husband Michael and our two beautiful children and would not trade it for the world.. I will soon start my 27th year practicing law in the wonderful State of Colorado.  I have spent all of those years in our courtrooms, travelling across the state to fight for clients in personal injury and family law (divorce and post-divorce) matters.  I work as an adjunct professor at both of Colorado's law schools, and I travel around the nation teaching advocates how to stand up before judges and juries and "do it" the right way.  There is very little that I have not encountered in the legal world, so if you need help dealing with anything, feel free to track me down to see if I can either steer you in the right direction or offer a bit more.. When seeking legal counsel, "fit" matters.  You need to make sure you have comfort and security working with your lawyer.  I know that when people need attorneys, the circumstances usually aren't the best. At my firm, we work hard to meet your needs and give you the guidance in challenging times. While we can never promise you a result, we can promise to do evereything we can to deliver the outcome you seek!  We also promise that before we ever agree to work with you, that the "fit" is there for your sake and ours.. Cindy Perusse

Firm: Perusse Family Law, PLLC
7887 East Belleview Avenue , Denver , Colorado 80111
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation, Family, Family, Family, Family
I have been practicing entirely family law for almost 3 decades now.   Family law became my focus early on just because there were a lot of people who came to my office with those kind of matters. I learned that I liked this area law because I was not afraid of the emotions that go along with it. As a business owner, a mother and a wife, I understand the things parents have to juggle on a daily basis. Adding a legal proceeding to the mix can feel overwhelming. The most important thing I can do for my clients is to protect their interests in a legal proceeding so they can continue to focus on their children and their jobs.. I litigate divorce cases from the simple to the complex. I have handled countless motions hearings and trials all over the metro area. Determining income and cash-flow, tax consequences and valuing of real estate, personal property and businesses are a regular part of my practice. Child custody and parenting time disputes can be ongoing. I represent many new and returning clients in modifying parenting time and child support. I partner with CPAs, therapists and other professionals to get the best results for my clients.. I have active licenses in Minnesota and Colorado. Our two offices allow me to handle a steady stream of interstate divorce and family cases.. I received my bachelor’s degree from UCLA and my law degree from Hamline University School of Law (now Mitchell-Hamline School of Law). I was a law clerk in the 3rd judicial district in Minnesota for a year right after law school. After my clerkship, I was an associate for small and medium law firms in Minnesota and California. I completed advanced training in Family Law Trial Advocacy through (NITA) and I have 40 hours of training in family law mediation.. I like to volunteer. You can find me at the military veterans legal clinic and domestic relations self-help clinics around the metro area. I am a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) helping kids in the foster care system. My husband and I are former foster parents.. I am a member of:• Minnesota Bar Association -family law section• Colorado Bar Associations-family law section• W.O.L.F. (Women Owned Law Firms) a fantastic group of lawyers in Colorado

Emily Ellison

Firm: Ellison & Ellison Law
353 Main St , Longmont , Colorado 80501
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Emily Ellison is a Longmont attorney who specializes in Family Law. Emily focuses her career on assisting people involved in tough legal situations. Her goal is to use her legal career to create a positive impact on society. She does this by listening to her clients’ needs, understanding how to guide their case to meet those needs, and fighting to obtain results. A dedicated and curious law student, Emily graduated in the top 25% of her class from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.. Emily’s academic success in law school landed her a dual judicial externship with Colorado Supreme Court Justice Brian D. Boatright and Jefferson County District Court Judge Christopher C. Zenisek. An inside perspective of the legal system gives Emily unique insight into how judges make decisions and write orders. Her experience taught her to effectively counsel clients to achieve the best possible outcome in their case. Sometimes that means advising clients to negotiate an out-of-court settlement, and other times taking a case to trial.. Eager to gain courtroom experience and begin advocating while in law school, Emily represented clients who were unable to afford an attorney and successfully obtained civil protection orders and defended a client from eviction.. In order to better understand the local legal community and the nuts and bolts of family law, Emily worked at an established Longmont divorce firm prior to starting Ellison & Ellison Law. Emily understands that clients faced with divorce or child custody issues are going through one of life’s hardest experiences—one that affects the most personal and basic needs. Emily will listen to your concerns and use her knowledge of the legal system and passion for advocacy to put you at ease and guide you to obtain the best result in your case.
