Location: Illinois I bought a car brand new in 2018. In 2021, the manufacturer sent me a letter saying there was a defect in the AC condenser that could cause it to fail, so they were extending the warranty on that part to 10 years. Over the last 5 years, that part has failed at least 1-2 times every year, resulting in loss of AC. The dealer always covers the replacement cost, but this typically involves leaving my car with them for 3+ days, so I often go without AC for a period of time. Location: Illinois My ex-partner filed an $8k small claims lawsuit against me claiming he was "removed without a 30-day notice or eviction letter," lost access to personal/business property, and incurred costs for temporary lodging, travel, storage, moving, replacement, and alleged damaged/missing property. Here is the exact detailed timeline of events: Domestic Incident & EOP: He hit me, leading me to file a police report and obtain an Emergency Order of Protection (EOP). I stayed at my parents' house for several days while waiting for him to be served. Police Escort & Waiting in Parking Lot: I requested a police escort so I could safely regain access to my house. I waited in the parking lot with my dad for about two hours for the police to arrive. Ex Moving Belongings Multiple Times: While my dad and I waited in the lot, I personally saw my ex moving his personal belongings into his car (I assume someone alerted him about the police report). He loaded his car, left the property, and returned multiple times to load and leave with more belongings. He did this at least three times before officers arrived. Police Instructions: When the officers finally arrived, I informed them that he had just left again with a load of property and would be back because he hadn't gotten everything yet. Location: Chicago--I'm hoping to get some perspective from attorneys or anyone familiar with Illinois and Cook County landlord-tenant laws. My landlord (a big corporate-owned company) offered me a one-year lease renewal earlier this year in March and I signed it immediately. After signing it, I didn't give it any more thought. Unbeknownst to me, the leasing office never signed their copy, so the lease was still not complete. Then in May, out of nowhere they served me with a notice of non-renewal, claiming I committed a lease violation because I had a bird feeder on my balcony that allegedly attracted pigeons. I removed the bird feeder immediately and asked them to reconsider, but they refused. I should add that my rent is PIF each month, on time, so I carry zero balance with this property manager. The notice of non-renewal also states that I "did not sign" the renewal agreement, which is false—I signed it months earlier. Their explanation is that because they never signed their copy, they were able to withdraw the renewal and terminate my tenancy. There are a couple of additional things... I received an email in April asking me to keep my balcony cleaner, and I complied by cleaning it weekly. I then got the flu and missed about two weeks, during which bird droppings accumulated. Good evening, is it normal to not have any communication with your lawyer until the day of your court date? My lawyer does not communicate with me until the day of court. For reference: I was charged with felony theft of $40 (enhanced because of it being a school or place of worship) & burglary. Location: Ohio Hello, I am looking for legal advice for the potential future subrogation claims against me. I am an Illinois resident involved in a single car crash in Ohio. Since I was the driver, I am pretty sure I am automatically at fault. However, I drove a car rental where I was not an authorized driver. Rental was under my friend's name but they allowed me to drive. Ended up in a single car crash. Passengers (6 including me) suffered no major injuries. We did not receive a bill from the car rental company yet, but we assume the car is totalled. Car crash occurred primarily due to weather (sudden rain caused hydroplaning). I understand weather does not help my case. And to complicate things, I do NOT have auto insurance. Friends have no desire to press charges, but their ER visits will most likely have their health insurance come after me. I would like to know how to protect myself when that time comes. Thank you
