Gabriel H. Neibergall returned to his hometown of Springfield and joined Sorling Northrup in 2016 after practicing in Florida’s Tampa Bay region for almost four years. In 2018, he began working for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Division of Legal Counsel.. While in Florida, Mr. Neibergall worked at the law firm of Whittel & Melton, where he litigated personal injury cases—including auto accidents, slip and falls, and negligent security—and other torts, such as the defamation of a public official. Prior to joining Whittel & Melton, Mr. Neibergall was an Assistant Public Defender in Clearwater and New Port Richey, Florida. While managing an extremely large caseload of misdemeanors and felonies ranging from D.U.I. to Murder, he conducted 24 trials (as either first or second chair) in addition to countless motions and evidentiary hearings. For his efforts on behalf of the office’s clients, Mr. Neibergall was recognized as Pinellas County’s “Attorney of the Year” for 2013.. During law school, Mr. Neibergall spearheaded his college’s involvement in reforming Florida’s criminal justice system to avoid wrongful convictions. In 2010, he was invited to work with the Florida Supreme Court’s Innocence Commission to study instances of post-conviction exoneration, including death-penalty cases where clients spent years on death row before proving their innocence. For that Commission, he coordinated his school’s research into the causes of false confessions. Prior to graduating, Mr. Neibergall also successfully wrote-on to the Stetson Law Review, and practiced municipal law with the City of St. Petersburg through Stetson’s Local Government Clinic.. I was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois. I attended Christ the King Grade School and Griffin High School (now Sacred Heart-Griffin). I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1985 with a degree in Finance and returned to Springfield to work as an investment officer for Marine Investment Management Company, a subsidiary of the original Marine Bank. There, I assisted in managing the investments of both private and public pension funds.. After working for four years, I decided to continue my education and enrolled at Southern Illinois University School of Law, where I graduated cum laude in 1992. I developed my writing skills during law school as a teaching assistant, member of the National Moot Court team, and member of editorial board of the law journal. During the summers, I interned with the law offices of Metnick, Barewin and Wise in Springfield and was hired as an associate by that firm after receiving my law degree. As the child of school teachers, I grew up in a home where being an educator was considered a noble profession. The ability to make the complicated seem logical, while guiding others to deeper understanding seemed instinctive. It wasn’t until I went away to law school that I realized most attorneys didn’t approach life, or their clients, in the same way. My vision in establishing Edwards Group LLC in Springfield, Illinois, was to create a different kind of law practice — one that focuses on lifetime planning for real life issues.. Throughout my career, I have actively balanced my professional pursuits with civic involvement, including service on the Rutledge Youth Foundation’s Board of Directors, the Youth Philanthropists Steering Committee for the Sangamon County Community Foundation, the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County, the Advisory Council of Brother James Court, the Board of Directors for the Illinois Baptist State Association, and leadership in my local church.. I reside in Springfield with my wonderful wife, Michelle, who is a nurse with a home health agency, and I have two children: daughter, Bailey, and son, Cole. In my free time I love spending time with my family and pursuing musical interests. I can play the piano, guitar and euphonium. I'm currently learning to play the violin along with my daughter.
