Matt earned his Juris Doctor from Salmon P. Chase College of Law where he attended the evening division as an adult professional. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Thomas More College. Matt completed a two-year legal apprenticeship prior to licensure under the direct guidance of John R. Kummer, longtime Northern Kentucky attorney and former Kenton County Deputy Master Commissioner.. Prior to attending law school, Matt worked for a private group of international consumer brands and overseas manufacturing partners. In this role, he engaged in product and brand development strategies for the United States retail market. Matt worked alongside the major retail corporate offices of home centers, mass merchants, and wholesale clubs. Matt quickly became well-versed in consumer products compliance standards issued by Underwriters Laboratory (UL), U.S. Department of Energy, and state-level consumer product laws, primarily in California.. Matt’s extensive experience in brand development and international business operations gives him the ability to adapt to his various clients’ needs. What led Matt to become a lawyer was part of a career evolution that gave him 20+ years of valuable and practical experience before he ever stepped foot inside a law school. Matt decided to pursue a career in law so that he could better engage in work that serves a meaningful purpose. Matt discovered that he wanted to invest his time in helping those in his local community and retire his frequent flyer status for a life spent closer to home.. Matt is married to his amazing wife, Erika, of over 15 years and together they have a teenage son and daughter. Matt credits Erika for his success and believes that his professional journey would not be possible without her support. In his free time, Matt plays guitar and piano, enjoys trips to Costco, and seeks out new restaurants in the area.

Firm: Landrum & Shouse, LLP
220 West Main Street , Louisville , Kentucky 40202
Practice Areas: Business , Civil , Professional Malpractice, White Collar Crime, White Collar Crime, White Collar Crime, White Collar Crime
Kent Westberry is a Senior Partner at Landrum & Shouse LLP, with over 31 years of criminal and civil litigation experience in federal and state courts. Kent has defended some of the largest and most highly publicized criminal prosecutions in Kentucky. However, despite the nature of the cases handled by Kent and Landrum & Shouse, it is our belief that the most successful criminal and civil defenses should not be high profile. Attorneys are most effective in the investigative stage, before an indictment has been returned and in the headlines. Kent also practices in the areas of commercial litigation, personal injury (defendant) and the representation of attorneys in Bar discipline proceedings.. Kent has been listed in the White Collar Crime, Commercial Litigation and Personal Injury Defense sections for publications such as Best Lawyers in America and Kentucky Super Lawyers Business Edition. He has, for many years, maintained an AV® Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He served as a federal prosecutor and as President of the Kentucky Bar Association in 2004-2005.. In 2005 and thereafter, Kent served as lead counsel for former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher in the Merit System investigation which resulted in a dismissal of all charges brought against this former Governor. Kent has recently served as counsel to a former Governor from the Northeast with regard to a Federal Grand Jury Investigation involving a now defunct business college in Kentucky. This investigation was closed without criminal charges being brought. Over the past several years, Kent has represented clients in criminal investigations and trials on behalf of the coal industry. In particular, Kent has been involved in the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster where an investigation was conducted by the Mining Safety and Health Administration ("MSHA") and the United States Attorney's Office in Utah. In the past, Kent was involved in representing executives in the Pyro Mine disaster where no charges were brought against his client. More recently, Kent obtained an acquittal for a coal mining executive in United States v. B&D Mining in federal court in Abington, Virginia. Kent has also obtained a significant judgment of acquittal for felony counts, post verdict, in United States v. KenAmerican Resources, et al. for his client who was a mine superintendent. The court ultimately sentenced this client as well as others to probation after a month long jury trial. Kent recently obtained an acquittal for an environmental compliance officer in Ohio v. United Wastewater.. Kent and his firm have handled virtually all types of White Collar matters. Kent has represented clients in matters involving state and federal tax violations, mail and wire fraud, healthcare fraud false statements, RICO, government contract fraud, environmental crime, money laundering, securities and insurance fraud. Kent has represented state court judges, attorneys, physicians, and other professionals in criminal investigations. Kent frequently advises businesses, municipalities and individuals in responding to requests for documents and records from grand jury subpoenas. Early in his career, Kent obtained an acquittal for an accountant in a criminal tax prosecution, United States v. Schultz. Other recent examples of successful representation involve convincing the United States Attorney's Office not to seek an indictment involving a former healthcare executive in a highly publicized investigation in Louisville. Kent is currently representing businesses regarding alleged tobacco excise tax violations in investigations throughout the Southeastern United States.. More recently, Kent has been involved in defending elected and appointed officials in voter fraud cases brought in federal court. These prosecutions have involved substantial post trial briefing as a result of the recent Supreme Court decision in Skilling as well as alleged Brady/Giglio violations resulting from the government's failure to produce exculpatory and/or impeachment material in advance of trial.. Kent served with distinction as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky from 1981-1987. Kent has also served as a Special Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court and as Chairman of the Civil Justice Reform Act for the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. He is a currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Public Defenders Corporation. Kent is a Life Member of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Kent has served in 2011 as Chairman of the United States District Court Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel, United States District Court, Western District of Kentucky – Louisville Division. He currently serves as Chairman of the Kentucky Bar Association Mentoring Committee.

Mike is a native of Cleveland Ohio where he attended St. Ignatius High School. He went on to complete his undergraduate studies at nationally ranked College of the Holy Cross, which he graduated from in 1982. Mike then attended law school and received his JD from American University's Washington College of Law.. Mike concentrates his practice in the business law arena, devoting most of his time in the following two areas: (i) general business and commercial litigation, with an emphasis on the rights and duties of shareholders, directors, officers and employees of businesses; and (ii) preparing the necessary documentation concerning the formation and operation of businesses, including business formation agreements and all types of contractual agreements needed by businesses in the course of their operations. During the course of his career, Mike has successfully represented clients in many jury and bench trials, acting as the first chair attorney in most of these cases. All told, Mike has litigated hundreds of cases involving millions of dollars, including cases seeking preliminary or injunctive relief. Mike believes that he brings a unique perspective to the practice of law in the business arena because his substantial litigation experience helps him anticipate issues that may arise in the contractual documents which he often prepares for clients.. Mike is also active in the community. He served as President of the Board of Directors of Harbor House of Louisville, a nonprofit entity serving the needs of developmentally disabled individuals in the community, during the years 2011 and 2012 and currently remains a board member on HH's executive committee.
