Location: Texas Hi, Long story short, I moved into a boarding house with a bunch of criminals (they’re actually felons and are committing identity theft crimes). Because of this, I went to the local post office and asked them to hold my mail. The clerk explained to me that they would hold just my mail but now I realize they held the whole house’s mail. Note that I have never been to the post office to pick up even my mail yet and would never steal the mail from any of my criminal roommates. Well, unfortunately the clerk didn’t explain to me that everyone’s mail would be held (I realize now that it says it on the name box but I didn’t read it as closely as I should because I was in a panic while doing it because I had discovered their identity theft scheme); well, fast forward to today, and the felon landlord that lives there is pissed and is threatening to press charges against me. Again, I’ve never stolen anyone’s mail - I’ve not even been there to pick up MY OWN MAIL yet from the hold and will now cancel the hold on Monday when they’re open. Here’s my question: can I really get prosecuted for this!? I did it under the understanding that my mail only - as I put my name only on the name box - would be held, not the rest of the house’s mail, and these criminal felon fuckasses are threatening…

Location: Texas. I left my laptop at a repair shop for a keyboard replacement. The manager called yesterday and admitted a technican cracked the screen while opening it. They offered to replace the screen, but only if I sign a form stating the crack existed before service and releasing them from all claims. I refused, and now they say the laptop will remain in their back room until I sign or pay the original keyboard invoice. Can they legally condition returning my property on signing a false release? What written demand should I make before considering small claims?

So, I made a payment arrangement that I would pay my full rent on the 27th through email and it was approved and it says so in my emails through the management group of my apartments. Then I get a notice to quit or pay, I then email and ask if the payment agreement made prior was still valid and they told me they could only wait until the 21st and if on the 21st at 10am it’s not paid they will file for eviction. I then call and try to find out why it was changed and they didn’t really give me an answer they just said they saw the 21st. So I asked about the process for eviction and I need to make my payment before the court date and have next months rent payment paid on time to get the eviction thrown out. But, I wouldn’t be able to pay my rent on the 1st - I wouldn’t be able to pay it on 3rd of September. My question is…how is it possible that they can just change when I have to pay when it was agreed a week or two prior for a later date? He said that it is AI in the email and that he will go back and check it. But in the email before I got the approval it said it would escalate my concern to a colleague and the next day I got an email saying it was approved. So how…

I moved out of my apartment about a month ago and just received a letter from my landlord saying I owe several hundred dollars for “damage” to the property. The problem is that I took photos and videos of the apartment on the day I moved out, and the things they listed were already there when I moved in. I also have the original move-in inspection report, although I’m not sure if it specifically mentions every issue. I contacted the landlord asking them to explain the charges, but they haven’t provided any photos or other evidence. What would be the best way to handle this? Should I send them my move-out photos and inspection report now, or wait until they provide evidence of the damage? Location: Austin, Texas.

Hello! Location: Texas I’m having issues with my apartment complex not fixing my inadequate AC unit. I am in Texas, so it is very HOT here. My thermostat says 75-80 throughout the day, when I have it set at 68-70 at times. We got maintenance to give us a window unit, but the property managers will not have the AC unit fixed! It does not effectively or efficiently cool my apartment. Additionally, they said they would order a part (after not even inspecting it), and then apparently they said they aren’t doing that anymore!! Today, they notified me that they were in my apartment and cleaned the external coils as well as adding Freon coolant (but the AC unit did not look wet or tampered with). The upstairs in my place reaches 95-100°F. But the managers say only the thermostat numbers matter… they haven’t even attempted to internally fix it because they just say that it works fine. They said we should purchase a window unit ourselves. I don’t think this is right considering they can’t provide comfortable conditions. I also have screenshots and I record evidence of temperatures and things they say. Can I do anything to legally break the lease?
