Rebecca's legal experience crisscrosses the country and reads like an adventure novel. From her start as a public defender trying felony cases in Miami, Florida, to serving her country in the U.S. Air Force, to protecting her community as a domestic and sexual violence criminal prosecutor in Addison County, Rebecca's wealth of legal experience has prepared her for any legal need her clients might have.. Rebecca was born on Yokota Air Force Base in Japan and subsequently moved frequently in her childhood. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, SD in 1998. Rebecca earned a B.S.B.A. in International Business from Drake University in 2001 and her Juris Doctorate from University of Iowa College of Law in 2004.. During law school, Rebecca studied European Union law in the south of France and British common law in London with a British Barrister. After graduating from law school, Rebecca joined the Miami, Florida Public Defenders' Office, gaining valuable criminal defense and trial experience in a wide variety of misdemeanor and felony cases for indigent defendants. She then joined a private criminal defense firm in Coral Gables, Florida, continuing her criminal defense practice and experience.. In 2007, Rebecca felt the call to serve her country and joined the United States Air Force as a Judge Advocate General. While stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, Rebecca rose through the ranks while broadening her legal skills and experience helping military personnel with their legal issues. During her active duty tour Rebecca wrote wills and counseled airman about their estates, worked in labor law, civil litigation and continued to expand her trial experience in criminal defense. Still a major in the Air Force reserves, Rebecca continues to serve her country and assist the men and women of the Air Force as appellate defense counsel, reporting to her duty station in Washington, D.C.. In 2012, Rebecca and her husband moved back to Vermont with plans to stay and raise their two children. Rebecca joined the Addison County State's Attorney's Office as the domestic and sexual violence prosecutor under a federal grant. For two years, Rebecca prosecuted domestic batterers and sexual predators, obtaining countless guilty pleas and no less than two guilty verdicts from trial juries.. At home, Rebecca enjoys her time with her husband and children on their hobby farm, raising chickens and ducks, along with a cat, a dog, and a horse the whole family is learning to ride.

The focus of my practice is criminal defense and family law in state and federal court.  I am a member of Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel, where I have the privilege and opportunity to be assigned by the U.S. District Court to represent indigent individuals charged with crimes in federal court.  In 2008, I was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Sparrow Project.  The Sparrow Project was initially granted funded by H. 859 (The Justice Reinvestment Pilot Screening Project) and continues to provide community based treatment plans and support to individuals while their criminal charges are pending in the Criminal Division of Windsor Superior Court.  I am currently a member of the team that oversees the operation of the Sparrow Project.  I also helped develop and start Vermont’s first and only DUI Treatment Court, and represent participants in the treatment team and systems meetings.

James Valente

51 Putney Road , Brattleboro , Vermont 05301 Zip code: 05301
Practice Areas: Criminal Defense
I enjoy trying cases.  There are fewer and fewer lawyers who go to trial regularly, and I think it's important because every trip to court makes me a better lawyer, and opponents will be more likely to resolve a case favorably if they're worried about our firm's ability to organize the facts and make a persuasive presentation.. I do civil litigation, personal injury, divorce, and criminal defense (both minor and major).  I also get involved with litigation that isn't easily categorized (town ordinance issues, worker's compensation claims, restraining orders, etc.). I am the president of Costello, Valente & Gentry, P.C., where I've worked since 2006.  We offer free consultations in all kinds of matters.  When we take a case, we use a team-based approach which means that the combined wisdom of all our lawyers helps every single client, and that every client can get in touch with us when they need to.

David Sleigh

364 Railroad St Ste E , Saint Johnsbury , Vermont 05819 Zip code: 05819
Practice Areas: Criminal Defense
David began practicing in the NEK as a Public Defender in August, 1983. He opened the firm, now known as Sleigh Law, in 1991. Over the last 38 years, he’s tried hundreds of jury cases, civil and criminal, in the Courts of several States and Federal Districts. Those trials include numerous acquittals in cases involving homicide, sexual assault, domestic assault and DWI. Notably, his DWI advocacy has forced the State to gain accreditation for its Blood/Breath alcohol program, revealed faulty scientific practices of the Lab, and compelled the Lab to change the way it expresses breath alcohol concentration in a way more favorable to the accused. His successes at the Vermont Supreme Court have included rulings that expanded an accused’s rights against self-incrimination, unlawful search and unreasonable seizure beyond criminal cases to include civil cases. Recently, he persuaded the Court to recognize a private right of action for patients to sue health providers for breach of , he and his friend and former college baseball teammate, Peter Coladacci, helped create a right of action for prisoners to sue prison doctors for medical malpractice.. For over 10 years, he and Robert Gensburg, advocated for Guantanamo Bay detainee, Abdul Zahir, finally pressuring the United States to admit that imprisonment of Mr. Zahir was unjustified and predicated upon mistaken identity. The common thread connecting all these cases is David’s commitment to the rights and dignity of individuals against the unjust actions of the powerful.
