My practice is devoted to the representation of individuals and families who have been injured due to the negligence or wrongful acts of others. Unlike some attorneys, our firm litigates cases and tries them to verdict before a jury when appropriate. I never work for an insurance company.. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cornell University and received my J. D. Degree, with honors, from the University of Miami School of Law. I began my law career as an associate of the noted personal injury attorney and former Miami Beach, Florida, Mayor, Jay Dermer in 1979. I subsequently opened my own practice in Miami, Florida in 1984. I moved my family and personal injury practice to Vermont in 1991 and am currently licensed in both Vermont and Florida and practice before the state and federal courts there.. I am a member of the Brain Injury Association of Vermont, the American Association for Justice, the Vermont Association for Justice, the Rutland County Bar Association, the Vermont Bar Association, and The Florida Bar. I am a past President of the Shrewsbury, VT Elementary School Board, and a past member of the Rutland South Supervisory Union School Board. I have worked from the Boards' perspective on contract negotiations with the local teachers Union and I have served on numerous committees on behalf of the Boards, including the Superintendent and Principal Search Committees. I have also served as a Moot Court judge at the Vermont Law School on a number of occassions over the years.. My wife of 30 years, Charlene, and I are recent empty-nesters and reside in Shrewsbury, Vermont with a Newfoundland and a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) and a cat. I am an avid fisherman and turkey hunter and a longtime member of the Green Mountain Fly Tyers Club. I am also a hobby aquarist, raising Endler's Livebearers.. Each of my personal injury cases is handled by me personally and your claim is not farmed out to paralegals or secretaries to work on your case. I maintain a modest in-house library of medical texts and forensic texts and have contacts with medical, vocational, accident reconstruction and economic experts and other experts around the country to consult with me and assist with case development as necessary. I limit the number and kind of cases I accept each year, so that I can devote the needed attention to each individual client. Feel free to call me at to arrange a free consultation concerning your claim. I can also be contacted by e-mail at Appointments can be arranged here at our offices or we can visit you in hospital or at your home.

I was born on May 8, 1959. Before attending law school, I ran ski lifts, picked apples, painted houses, taught skiing, and worked as an adolescent and family counselor for a community action agency. I eventually went on to study law, graduating from Vermont Law School, summa cum laude (1st in my class) in 1990.After law school, I served as a law clerk at the Vermont Supreme Court. I entered private practice with a Burlington law firm in 1991, concentrating in professional malpractice cases, personal injury, and general litigation. In 1998, I decided to open my own solo practice, 100% dedicated to helping injured Vermonters, visitors, and their families in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases.. I am board-certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the the National Board of Trial Advocacy.. In 2006, I was honored to be among 50 trial attorneys from around the United States selected to attend the intensive 22-day Trial Lawyers College, in Wyoming, founded by the legendary trial lawyer, Gerry Spence. In 2010, I served on the Faculty of the College.. Martindale-Hubbell, the oldest and perhaps most highly-recognized independent attorney review and rating service in the United States, has awarded me its highest rating, "AV - Preeminent.". From 2007 through 2014, I have been chosen by my peers to be included as a "Super Lawyer" in New England Super Lawyers Magazine.. From 2010 to 2011, I served as President of the Vermont Association for Justice (VTAJ). I am also a proud member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), and serve on the Board of Governors of the Association. Many lawyers call themselves "litigators." But to a large degree, "litigation" consists of throwing lots of paper at the other side, but very rarely if ever taking a case to trial. I am proud to be a trial lawyer. I believe that when an attorney is ready and able to take a case to trial, the client is much more likely to get justice. Some personal injury lawyers have high-volume practices, advertising heavily on high-cost radio and TV ad campaigns. Some of these "settlement mills" take on hundreds of new cases each year, hoping to quickly settle as many cases as possible. I do not operate that way. I run a small, client-centered law practice, focusing on the individualized needs of a small number of clients. I advertise minimally, and take on only a few new cases each year. I limit the cases I handle to those involving serious, life-changing personal injuries, such as permanent back and neck injuries, fractures, burns, paralysis, disfigurement, or death.By keeping my overhead and case-volume low, I am able to handle each case personally from start to finish. I never pawn my clients off on a junior associate or paralegal. I work closely with each of my clients, to learn about their lives and to discover and tell the story behind their cases. I live in Woodbury, Vermont with my lovely wife, our daughter and granddaughter, and a couple of puppies. I enjoy reading, traveling, and playing music.. One of my core beliefs is that we should leave this world better than we found it, and one of the reasons I became a lawyer in the first place was to help people. I try to keep that in the forefront of my mind, both in and out of the courtroom.
