My statewide Colorado practice currently focuses on deals and disputes. I help businesses and individuals manage risk, bring greater clarity to their business decisions, and achieve successful outcomes in high-stakes litigation.. I am just as comfortable in the courtroom as I am in a boardroom. I argue and try cases before judges or juries, in court, every year. My litigation practice occasionally has me advocating on behalf of clients before regulatory panels and in administrative venues. For my clients not involved in litigation or needing to bring or defend a lawsuit, it is my goal to try to resolve issues and avoid disputes altogether. Having taken cases through verdict, I look at risk in a holistic manner from, inking the deal to defending it in court should it become necessary.. I regularly handle commercial cases and deals involving: --negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and fraud; --contracts, partnership and sales agreements; --construction matters including contracts, payment claims, and defects; and, --employment related matters including trade secret misappropriation and enforcement and defense of non-compete and non-solicitation agreements.. I also handle real estate deals and disputes involving: --HOAs; --real estate contract disputes; --development ventures and related contract disputes; and,. --landlord-tenant relationships.
My practice handles appeals from trial court judgments, in both civil and criminal cases. For every year since 2006, I have been listed in the field of appellate law in The Best Lawyers in America (www.bestlawyers.com) and in Colorado "Superlawyers" (www.superlawyers.com).. I was taught to perform appellate work by former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Jean Dubofsky. After Justice Dubofsky decided to leave the bench, she became a private practitioner for a number of years before her recent retirement. While she was in private practice, I had the privilege of working with her on many appeals in the Colorado state appellate system and the federal appellate system (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit). Through her, I acquired the knowledge, experience, and judgment to become a good appellate lawyer.. In an appeal, the quality of the legal briefs is especially important. I have repeatedly been told by trial lawyers, and I have heard indirectly from judges, that the legal writing in my appellate briefs is particularly clear.. I am a 1986 magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University Law School, and a 1982 summa cum laude and phi beta kappa graduate of Princeton University.
My practice is limited to business and commercial litigation and trial. I do not draft contracts, offer advice on company formation or otherwise have a transactional practice. It's just litigation and trial.. Most of my cases are focused on business and commercial litigation and trial on behalf of small businesses where the damages at issue are more than $100,000. My strategy is to push the case to a resolution through settlement or trial efficiently, effectively, and ethically. Most cases that resolve favorably are the ones where the party is prepared to go to trial so my focus is on litigating the case with that end in mind. I usually represent clients for an agreed hourly or flat fee rate. While I accept some business and commercial cases on a hybrid and contingency basis, the damages must be significant and the defendant has to have assets to satisfy a settlement or judgment.. I do offer some litigation representation on a flat fixed fee including drafting demand letters and resolution of disputes without a lawsuit. I will also pursue lawsuits with damages of less than $100,000 for an agreed flat fee (although it usually needs to be at least $30,000 in damages to make economic sense).. I genuinely enjoy practicing law and the more complicated and convoluted the legal problem or the case, the more I really enjoy figuring out a strategy and a solution. However, I understand that clients aren’t quite as enamored about the legal challenges they may be facing. My goal when I work with clients is to clarify and simplify the legal issues, offer the best ways to achieve a favorable result and actually make a recommendation on how I think we should proceed. I think it’s also important to understand the limitations of litigation and when a lawsuit might not be the best option. However, if we do need to file a lawsuit, I’ve handled hundreds of litigation cases over the years including complex business disputes, multi-million dollar shareholder and breach of contract litigation and other business and commercial litigation. I have the experience to navigate a case through discovery, settlement, trial and an appeal if necessary.. If you want to learn more about me and my firm (and see a picture of my dog), my website includes information on my minimum retainer, hourly rate, experience and an online scheduling calendar to book a time to talk about your case.

After graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education and teaching English to high school seniors, I started law school at the University of Kansas, during which I received a top notch legal education while staying true to my commitment to public service. I have volunteered for the Douglas County Legal Aid Society and the Douglas County Adult Protective Services during her law school education. I also have been a Metro Volunteer Lawyer pro bono attorney since I started practicing law in Colorado, and have given my time to the Rape Awareness and Prevention Program for several years.
My practice is focused 100% on litigation, providing representation along the Front Range, and throughout the State of Colorado. I focus on Wrongful Death and Personal Injury, Criminal Defense (ranging from traffic violations to homicide), Liquor Licensing, and Commercial Litigation.. I am actively involved in the Colorado Bar Association. I served as the President of the Colorado Bar Association (2015-2016). During my term as CBA President, I was able to travel throughout the State of Colorado meeting lawyers, legal professionals, and judges across the Eastern Plains, Western Slope, and along the Front Range. Aside from making great contacts with people in those places, I was also able to help shape the bar association and legal profession moving forward, focusing on issues such as diversity and inclusion, attorney health and wellness, access to justice, and formation of the CBA strategic plan.. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1999, with a B. A. in History. While at University of Colorado, I was a member of the Track and Field Team (High Jump and 400 Meter Hurdles), and selected to the Big XII Commissioner's Honor Roll, 1997 and 1998. I was also a recipient of the Justice Byron R. White Memorial Award.. After graduating from University of Colorado, I attended the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and earned my Juris Doctor in 2003. While at DU, I was the President of the student chapter of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), now AAJ, and was also a member of the Moot Court Board for two years.. From the beginning of my legal career, I have been passionate about trial practice. I was on the University of Denver's ATLA traveling trial team, and in 2003 my team went on to be National Champions in trial practice.
My practice focuses on commercial, product liability, and toxic tort litigation. I have always enjoyed the trial practice because it provides me with the opportunity to present complex and technical information to a jury who are almost always trying to do the right thing. Overcoming all of the technical arguments and issues and convincing a jury that the right thing to do is to render a verdict for my client is endlessly challenging and extremely satisfying.
My practice currently consists solely of helping veterans obtain disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have previous experience in criminal defense and federal capital habeas work.
My personal goal as an attorney is to deliver quality professional legal services at a fair price. Toward that end, our firm generally offers a complimentary initial consultation to prospective clients for exploration of the legal matter and compatibility. In addition to my legal career, I have served in both my community and my church for the past 30 years motivated by the belief that “much more is required from the person to whom much more is given."
My national litigation practice focuses on defending product designers, manufacturers, and retailers in product liability and commercial matters. I have acted as national and local counsel for a number of companies throughout the United States. I have also helped employers and other businesses enforce their intellectual property rights and defend themselves in employment actions pending in federal and state courts.

I specialize in Sex Crimes and Violent Crimes however I have a senior staff of attorneys at Shazam Kianpour & Associates who specialize in DUI and Traffic law and another who specialize in Family and Domestic Violence and Economic and White Collar Crimes.. I have experience in Federal Court, especially in Sex Crimes, possession and Distribustion of Child Pornography, and Child Sex Crimes. I have taken cases from simple DUI and speeding tickets all the way up to Homicide cases to trial and been first and second chair in them to many varying degrees.. While I see litigation as a sometimes necessary component of law, I believe the adverserial process is overplayed. What is best for the case is really a matter of what is best for your client, your clients future and your clients family. I am not smarter than my clients, I am merely experienced in a field that they are not. I have had clients tell me they feel like I spent a lot of time educating them as to the law so instead of me telling them what to do, it was a joint process and venture that left them feeling like the decision of how their life played out was their own. My job is to protect you, my job is to secondarily defend you. These are two different aspects of law and often some lawyers get so bent on defending their client, they forget that protecting them comes first. Call me to ask me the difference between protecting, and defending people. And ask about the difference between my law firm, and the others, and during our conversation, you will see why you have made the smart choice in selecting Shazam Kianpour & Associates for your Colorado raffic and criminal defense needs.

I also devote a good portion of my practice to drafting documents including pre- and post-nuptual agreements and estate planning documents.
