Firm: Gurney Law, PLLC

My name is Nicholas Gurney and I am a trial attorney handling catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases with a focus on defective and unsafe products and trucking crash investigation.  I also serve as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida, where I am honored and blessed to teach advocacy skills to the next generation of legal professionals.  Born and raised in Florida, I've made it my mission to represent regular people harmed by powerful corporations, massive insurance companies, and oppressive government.  In my career, I have secured favorable jury verdicts in both civil and criminal cases.  I am very proud of this fact because some attorneys rarely ever try a case in front of a jury.. This matters because insurance companies and large corporations know which attorneys are willing to go to trial.. Perhaps more importantly, they know who can do it well.. To hone my skills as a trial attorney, I attended a top Legal Studies program at the University of Central Florida.  There, I studied both the art and science of trial advocacy.  After graduating from UCF with Honors from the prestigious Burnett Honors College, I attended the University of Florida Levin College of Law where I graduated Cum Laude with Dean's List Honors.  At UF Law, I donated more free legal service hours than any other graduate--an accomplishment for which I was honored with the H.G. Blechman Pro Bono Service Award.  I worked hard at UF, earning the highest grade in six (6) different courses and degree certificates in Community Service, Criminal Justice, and Pro Bono Legal Work.  To this day, I am one of only a handful of attorneys ever to be inducted into both the National Order of Barristers and the Florida Blue Key National Honor Society upon graduation.. Since graduating from UF's law school, I have helped secured favorable results for injured clients including single-event jury verdicts of $1.4 million (Palm Beach County) and $1.3 million (Collier County).  Even so, I never stop learning.  In 2016, I became one of the youngest graduates of Gerry Spence's famed Trial Lawyer's College in Dubois, Wyoming.  For my professional accomplishments, I have been recognized by Best Lawyers' Ones to Watch (2020), Super Lawyers' Rising Star (2020), National Trial Lawyers' Top 40 Under 40 three times (2018, 2019, and 2020), and the University of Central Florida's Top 30 Under 30 (2017).. I currently assist in coaching the UCF Trial Team, of which I am a proud alumnus and former national championship competitor.  In my spare time, I enjoy woodworking, exploring the outdoors with my puppy, and spending time with my niece and nephew, both of whom are wise beyond their years.. I am available to take your call, day or night, at.

Firm: Family First Firm

My name is Geoff Hoatson and I’m the founder of the Family First Firm. I grew up in Central Florida surrounded by all my extended family. Both of my grandfathers were veterans of World War II and my paternal grandfather received the Purple Heart and Silver Star from Fleet Admiral Nimitz for his heroism as a medic on the Pacific Front. I gained a deep respect for our service members and my elders, while listening to them recount their time in the service. I knew that I wanted to help these people I admired so much. Unfortunately, over the years, both grandfathers ended up with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. My paternal grandfather was able to be qualified for Medicaid and my maternal grandfather was able to receive benefits from the VA. To call these benefits a blessing is a massive understatement; they allowed both of my grandmothers to age in their homes with dignity.. Born and raised in the Orlando area, I attended a local high school and then the University of Central Florida. It wasn’t until I went to Emory University for law school that I left Central Florida for the very first time. However, that choice was an easy one, because Emory is ranked as one of the top law schools in the country and has one of the preeminent estate planning programs. After graduating from Emory, I returned to Orlando to marry my fiancée, start a family, and begin the practice of law.. In 2009, I decided to go out on my own and open the Family First Firm to help seniors and service members protect themselves, their families, and their legacies from the unique problems that our seniors face.  We are proud to have helped countless families achieve their goals and gain peace of mind. We would be honored to help you too.

Firm: Orange County Public Defender's Office

My legal career began at the Orange County Public Defender's Office in February of 2005, where I worked for 9.5 years.  At the time I left in 2014, I was an attorney in the major crimes division, handling only first and second degree murder cases.  I left to start a firm with two partners, but a little over a year later, one partner needed to dissolve the firm, so I formed a solo practice to finish out my criminal cases.  I am proud to be back at the Public Defender's Office as of August 2016, helping those who cannot afford to hire an attorney.. Now that I am back at the Orange County Public Defender's office, I am not available for hire.  My clients are appointed to me based upon the charges and what judicial division the case is assigned to.  Appointed clients and their families still want to know about the attorney handling the case, so I hope this profile can provide that information and help everyone feel good about me when the client did not have the choice of picking me for representation.. I am a board certified criminal trial attorney, which means I am considered an expert in the field of criminal trials; there are approximately 431 attorneys in this state with that certification.  I have over 11.5 years of experience doing criminal defense, and have handled many first and second degree murder cases, attempted murders, robberies, carjackings, home invasions, burglaries, rapes, drug traffickings and possessions, etc.  I have had approximately 60 jury trials and approximately 10 non-jury trials, all of which were bench trials for violations of probation.  I have not counted cases where I announced a case as being ready for trial and the State dropped the case without picking a jury; I don't count those as a trial, though some private attorneys do, so be careful when looking at trial numbers, and ask questions as to what the attorney considers to be a trial.. I plan on keeping my website's blog online, but it's updated sporadically; essentially when I feel like writing.  One blog in particular is written to help families find ways to help their loved one who is charged with a crime.  If you'd like to check it out, please use the link in my profile to go to my website.

Firm: Lannon Land Litigation Local Law, PLLC

My great grandfather, Eugene Malone, started a law firm in Central Illinois which my father, Richard James "Jim" Lannon, Jr., managed prior to being appointed Judge on the 13th Judicial Circuit, in and for LaSalle County, Illinois. My Aunt, M. Catherine Lannon, was the head of the Administrative Law Division of the Florida Attorney General's Office for 33 years after clerking at the 1st DCA. My cousin, Laura C. Lannon, served as a prosecutor for Cook County, Illinois (i.e., the Chicago metropolitan area) prior to her untimely and unfortunate death. You could say that being an attorney is in my blood.. Born in LaSalle, Illinois in 1974, my family moved to Dedham, Massachusetts when my parents divorced in 1984. I attended school in Massachusetts from 4th grade to my senior year of college, having graduated from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester in 1996. For the next 4 years, I worked as a sales representative for BellSouth Advertising & Publishing Corporation in Tucker, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Being a sales representative prepared me for being an attorney, for it is far more difficult to sell a product or service to an unwilling buyer than it is to demonstrate to a jury or a judge why your client's position in the lawsuit is meritorious, or why your client deserves to win, and why your client deserves to be compensated (i.e., paid damages).. I attended law school at The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. from 2000 to 2003. During this time, I was invited onto the Journal of Contemporary Health Law & Policy (this journal is reserved for students in the top 10% of their class) and (2) Moot Court. My Comment, "Let Him Die with Dignity or Hope for a Cure, the Consequences of Modern Medicine", was printed in the Winter 2002 edition. I have also held the prestigious honor of serving as the Note and Comment Editor for the Journal.. After graduation from law school, I clerked for The Honorable Peggy A. Quince at the Florida Supreme Court for 2 years. I then worked at the 8th largest law firm in the world at the time in its Central Florida Litigation Practice Group handling commercial litigation and appeals. I left that Am Law 100 firm to work at an intellectual property litigation boutique before serving as the Deputy City Attorney in Palm Bay, Florida for 2.5 years. I was thereafter promoted to City Attorney, a position that I held for 7 years before founding my law firm.
