Completing certification training for breath alcohol machines is absolutely mandatory, in my opinion, for any lawyer who handles DUI / DWI cases.  I have gone even further and acquired several of my own breath testing machines, including an Intoxilyzer 5000 and an ECIR, which enables me to further familiarize myself with these machines.  Similarly, after completing training on forensic chromatography, I acquired my own gas chromatograph, the machine used in the state lab to conduct gas chromatography.. I have earned the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Designation, and as of July 2025, only one other lawyer in the entire state of Virginia has earned this Designation.  To do so, I completed course work on the following subjects:. (1) Forensic Chromatography: Theory and Practice, which addresses the theory of Gas Chromatography, as well as ethanol based analysis by Headspace Gas Chromatography with a Flame Ionization Detector (HS-GC-FID);. (2) Forensic Analysis of Solid Drugs, which addresses the instrumental analysis of solid drugs in their pre-consumption form using FTIR, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Colormetrics, Microscopy, Thin Layer Chromatogrphy, etc.; and. (3) Forensic Principles of DUID, which involves the pharmacology of drugs, issues of how drug use may or may not impact driving, instrumental analysis by GC-MS, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), etc.. All three courses were 40-hour courses which included both classroom time and hands-on time working in a lab.  I calibrated instruments, developed samples, injected samples for testing, analyzed and interpreted data, etc.  I used the instruments in the same way, using the same matrices, as an analyst would in a forensic laboratory.. I am also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and I have been recognized for excellence by various organizations.. Larry Burch, is a successful trial attorney and former Navy JAG Officer. Donna was even designated by the 9th Judicial Circuit’s State Attorney to sign charging informations, a designation given only to a select few. The cases Donna dealt with as a special prosecutor were domestic in nature and included domestic violence batteries, assault, stalking, harassing phone calls, violations of domestic violence injunctions, and violations of pre-trial release conditions.. Attorney Hung truly enjoyed litigating in court and because of her impressive courtroom presence and trial skills, she was offered an associate position at a Winter Park law firm where she quickly realized family law and criminal defense were her passion. Nicole O’Neal is a partner at Butler Moss O'Neal, P.L.C. She practices exclusively family law, representing clients in family law matters, including a significant number of complex and contested cases.  Nicole is a New England native, but after enlisting in the United States Navy in 2008, she was stationed in Gulfport, Mississippi and transferred to Hampton Roads, Virginia. She completed two combat tours to Afghanistan, as well as an additional deployment to Japan focusing on humanitarian relief after the tsunami in 2011.. She became interested in family law when she was promoted to a non-commissioned officer and her junior troops began approaching her with their family problems such as divorce, child custody and visitation, and the division of marital property (including military retired pay) upon divorce. She familiarized herself with Virginia family law, as well as the federal laws governing military divorce cases.
