I spent the better part of my life working for litigation law firms. I started my career in law as a file clerk before going to law school and becoming a lawyer. I was blessed with many great mentor's, all of whom were litigators, and I planned to follow in their footsteps. But all that changed when one of them suddenly passed away.. Although he was a successful attoney with a family, he didn't have a plan in place. Without a plan in place, the family began the slow and painful process of navigating through the probate process. After seeing the devestation and impact it had, I left the life of civil litigation practice and opened my own firm dedicated to protecting families and helping them avoid the turmoil of failing to plan.. I've helped hundreds of clients create meaningful plans that will not only protect themselves, but also their families and finances. Vanessa was born in Los Angeles, CA, and has lived on both the East and West Coasts, with most of her years spent in the Sacramento region. After attending Del Campo HS in Fair Oaks, Kennedy HS in the Greenhaven/Pocket area, and having graduated from Elk Grove HS, she moved to the Washington DC area and attended George Mason University in Virginia. Upon returning to Sacramento in 2002, Vanessa obtained her Real Estate Sales license, California Attorneys license in 2016, Real Estate Broker license in 2018, and Mortgage Loan Origination license in 2021.. I conduct my practice with a high degree of ethics and civility. For cases in litigation, I attempt to resolve all my cases for my clients'  best interests, and am in  favor of early mediation to explore early resolution before legal costs make resolution impracticable.  When I represent clients at trial, it is with the knowledge that this is the last resort, and I am always well prepared. As such, I have had a great deal of success for my clients. For non-litigation matters, I enjoy solving complicated situations and crafting unique transactional agreements to suit my clients' individual needs.

It has been a great privilege to be an attorney practicing in San Mateo County over the last 40 years.  My wife Melinda is also an attorney, as well as our daughters Julia and Allison..  When I came to California from Wisconsin to attend law school I knew no one in California.  Now I have deep roots in the legal community in San Mateo County and our children have inherited the passion that Melinda and I share for the practice of law.  Like athletes, attorneys experience the joy of winning and the disappointment of losing.  Unlike athletes we are not engaged iin a sport for entertainment,.  Our performance as attorneys has real life consequences for our clients.  It is an awesome responsibility, but I have always enjoyed the challenge and, thankfully, I have more often than not asisted my clients in achieving successful outcomes. I cannot conceive of a more fulfilling and challenging career than praciticing law.

I am a certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate with the California Bar, and I have an LL.M. (Masters in Laws) in Estate Planning.  I assist with estate planning, special needs planning, trust administration, probate administration, and limited conservatorships in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.. I am happily surrounded by boys - my husband (who helps me at the office), our two sons Caleb and Isaac, and our dog Ulysses, pit bull-boxer mix.  In my limited free time, I enjoy practicing yoga and pilates, reading dystopian fiction, and having deep spiritual conversations with friends.
