Insurance Mixup

employment attorney Ohio Oct 8, 2026
My husband’s current employer offers insurance. They have 3 tiers of plans. My husband got the highest tier where he has been paying the most per paycheck. However, his employer misfiled paperwork so he was paying for the highest tier, but only received the lowest tier insurance with the highest deductible for the last 4 years. He decided to get more medical care (including a surgery) while he thought he had the highest tier and we were left with tons of bills. We just thought his insurance sucked. The office finally caught the mistake and said they would refund the difference between paying for the lowest and highest tier. So, forcibly giving him the lowest tier insurance. Finally, he was supposed to get that refund today and it was combined with his paycheck so a very large portion was taken out for taxes. It is normal for this kind of thing to be taxed? It doesn’t feel like we are even at all now. Not sure if we should get a lawyer involved. Location: Ohio
