Got charged E felony for having tape over license plate

Location: New York City Cops pulled me over around midtown Manhattan. I was on a motorcycle. I had one of the letters covered. They put me in handcuffs, rode my bike to the precinct and put me in a cell. I didn’t think it was a big deal, they told me I was getting a summons and to appear in court. When I got home, I look on the ticket and see “OFFENSE CHARGED PL175.35 01”!!! Googled it and now I’m about to shit myself. Says up to 4 years in prison??? What if I got an asshole judge that decides to maximize my sentence? Usually they just write you a traffic ticket and go about their day but I guess because of congestion tolls, they’re making it more serious? Edit: the cop that took me in were being cool about everything. I cooperated. They were saying things like oh don’t worry, you just have to show up and possible pay a small fine, but make sure you show up or else they’ll send out a warrant!
