Pain is inevitable; misery is optional. That is the philosophy that governs Mark Shields’ approach to legal problems, particularly in family law. While many legal issues deal with contracts, bills or dented fenders, a family law situation is thicker because it deals directly with people. What’s more, those people comprise the family, which Mark believes to be the fundamental unit of society. Because a family law issue is so important and so personal, it should be handled by someone who understands humans and someone who cares. Mark believes that being down to earth and an honest, approachable guy is just as important in the practice of law as it is in life in general.. Mark Shields has been married for over seventeen years and is the proud father of five daughters. He is a native of Phoenix and has deep Arizona roots, going back four generations. He is also a third-generation Arizona lawyer. Mark graduated from Washington High School in Phoenix and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1993 with a degree in sociology. Before earning his bachelor’s degree, Mark also spent two years in Portugal as a missionary for his church and working with people of varied backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. After working for a year or two while his wife finished up her degree, Mark entered the J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he graduated in 1997. Mark’s law school class was ranked seventh in the nation for average GPA and LSAT scores, so he was immediately initiated into a highly competitive environment.. Mark began with Gillespie, Shields & Durrant back when it was Gillespie & Associates in 1996, prior to his last year of law school. Since that time, Mark has practiced heavily in the area of family law and has also had extensive experience in civil litigation, employment law, juvenile law, and insurance disputes.. Mark is happy to report that his approach to practicing law has changed remarkably little during this recession because he has always sought to deliver true value to his clients. Whether the case involves millions of dollars or no dollars, Mark has consistently sought to provide his clients the best service for the most accessible price.. In his spare time, if there is such a thing, Mark enjoys spending time with his family (especially when it’s in the White Mountains), listening to fine music of many genres, building high quality stereo speakers, home improvement projects, and, more recently writing. Mark has published two religious books and hopes to publish more in the years to come. Mark speaks Portuguese and has also studied Spanish, German, and a few other languages through the years.

Educated at the University of Kansas, admitted to practice in 1982, admitted to the State Bar of Arizona May 24, 2001.. ESTATE PLANNING, WILLS AND TRUSTS Noted attorney Libby Banks focuses exclusively on the areas of Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Administration. Her work is therefore concentrated in just a few key areas. Libby’s clients range in age from 18 to 98. Some have large families. Some have small or no families but consider their pets their children. Client assets range from a house, a car and a small bank account to large businesses and multiple rentals and properties around the United States.. We have been advising and protecting a wide range of clients over 30 years. Our goal is always the same: to make the process of estate planning as smooth and painless as possible. In fact, our plans are designed to preclude the court from meddling in your estate.. Libby Banks’ passion for estate planning began during her early years as a litigation attorney. Libby found herself sorting out the inevitable family fallout caused by poor estate planning and improperly written wills and trusts.. Some clients hired Libby to resolve the disagreements caused by this lack of planning, and some hired her to fight for a share of the estate when they believed another relative had cheated them.. Too often, Libby saw families come apart, with siblings vowing never to talk to their brothers and sisters again.. As Libby often says, “I value family above almost everything, and these cases broke my heart. I decided to go into estate planning to help people avoid these painful, unnecessary family fights.”. Today Libby Banks focuses exclusively on preventing the problems caused by an unplanned, or poorly planned, estate. Libby skillfully represents clients in the areas of Estate Planning, preparing Wills and Trusts, Asset Protection planning, and Probate and Trust Administration.. When you engage The Law Office of Libby Banks, you have the added assurance of knowing that your estate is being handled by a highly experienced, seasoned attorney.. I studied mathematics at Renssealaer Polytechnic Institute before transferring to SUNY Oneonta to become a teacher. While searching for my first permanent teaching position, my father suffered a heart attack and I went to work in his custom woodworking business. That was intended to last only until he got back on his feet. Ten years later, I was still at it. Then, for family reasons, my wife and I moved to Arizona. The initial plan was for me to get a masters degree and return to teaching, until my father-in-law suggested that I consider law school, which at the time in Arizona was very affordable. "Besides," he argued, "even if you did not like law, you would still have an advanced degree to use to get back to teaching." As it turns out, the practice of law was a perfect fit.. While custom woodworking and the practice of law might appear to have nothing in common, both require patience, exacting standards, and attention to detail. My father and I never worried about satisfying a customer becuase invariably my father's standards and expectations were much higher than the customers. If he was satisfied, the customer was satisfied. That is the same work ethic I apply in my practice.. Obviously, my background in education is relevant to my current role as Director of Legal Services for the East Valley Institute of Technology.. I am admitted to practice in Arizona, the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
