Joe was raised on his family's ranch just east of Billings and attended school in Shepherd. He was an active member of 4-H, FFA, Montana Junior Angus Association, and numerous sports teams. Joe played for the Rocky Mountain College men's basketball team and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, in Business Administration/Management and Economics in 2005. I grew up on a farm north of Havre, Montana and attended the University of Montana for undergraduate studies.  In 1987, I graduated with a High Honors Degree in Political Science and high honors minors in History and Economics.  I then matriculated to the law school at the University of Montana and graduated with Honors in 1990 with my juris doctorate in law.  While in law school, I was an associate editor of the Montana Law Review and my article on comparative negligence was published in 1990.  I was also a member of the Law School Negotiation Team for two years and represented the law school in regional and national competitions.  I started my practice out of law school and have been successfully practicing law since the age of 25.  I have focused my practice on primarily personal injury and commercial litigation for the last fifteen years.  I think the fact that I like to help people makes the practice of law ideal as a career choice.

John was born in South Bend, Indiana, and grew up in the Smelter City of Anaconda, Montana.  When choosing a career path, his interest in science led him to Montana Tech in Butte, Montana, where he graduated with honors in Engineering Science in 1994. While going to school at Tech he also worked as a railway track crewman, an intern at an engineering firm testing magnetohydrodynamics power generation and plasma arc furnaces, and also as a powerline construction inspector.. He passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam and started graduate work in Petroleum Engineering.  However, after taking an environmental law course, he changed his mind and decided to go to law school instead.  Prior to heading to law school he obtained a commercial driver’s license and drove specialized commercial vehicles in oil fields and drove belly and end-dump trucks for the construction of the Old Works golf course in Anaconda.. John earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana School of Law.  After graduation, he worked as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Montana Department of Transportation for three years.  There he handled construction, environmental and eminent domain litigation.  He also represented the agency in administrative hearings.. John went into private practice with the civil defense/insurance firm of Phillips & Bohyer, and then the Phillips Law Firm, later becoming Phillips Haffey.  In these firms he litigated insurance, injury, contract, products liability, trucking and intellectual property matters.. In November of 2015, he co-founded Haffey Vap PLLC, with Mitch Vap.  Their desire for smaller firm with a broader scope led them to form Haffey Vap.  John is admitted to practice in State and Federal Courts in Montana, the 9th Circuit and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal and as a patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is AV® rated by Martindale Hubbell and has been listed as a SuperLawyer® in civil litigation since 2010.  He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, the State Bar of Montana, and the Defense Research Institute.. Outside of work, like many in Montana, he enjoys the outdoors – hiking, skiing, biking, snowmobiling, boating and floating.  Being born in South Bend, for better or worse, has made him a lifelong Fighting Irish fan.  Coming from immigrant Irish stock, he loves Irish history and stays in contact with his Irish cousins all over the globe.  He also plays the Great Highland bagpipes and enjoys playing whenever he can with the Celtic Dragon Pipe Band, but especially enjoys volunteering to play in parades and at memorial and veteran ceremonies.  Finally, John’s greatest passion is spending time with family and friends, especially his wife Jen, and their boys Liam and Finn.

First off, in the spirit of full disclosure, I confess that I am not a native Montanan – I’m an Oregon transplant.  (When football season rolls around, I don’t argue Griz or Cats – I just sit back and remind everyone I’m a Duck… or at least, I used to.  Then, Marcus Mariota graduated...  but, I digress.)I am the only child of a single working mom.  I was born in San Francisco, and we moved to the Willamette Valley in Oregon when I was about 9 years old.  I grew up out in the country where ageing hippies (including some of the original Merry Pranksters) live beside old school farmers and ranchers.  From both, I learned lessons about self-sufficiency that I still rely on today. After high school, I moved to Washington and married a man in the Air Force.  When he got orders for Okinawa, Japan, I wasn’t sure I would like it – four years later, I didn’t want to leave. I was always horse crazy, but we couldn’t afford one when I was growing up – I’ve been making up for that ever since.  Today, I have two slightly lunatic retirees and a ginormous warmblood named Steve.  Don’t ask about him unless you’re prepared to look at pictures – I’m ridiculously fond of him.I have a variety of other animals – all strays or adoptees.  My Lincoln – who came out of a box of free puppies at Safeway – often comes to the office with me because legal research is a lot more fun when there’s a big old head lying across your feet.
