29-A §407. Defaced or missing identification numbers

1. Assignment of special number. When an engine, serial or vehicle identification number has been omitted, altered, removed or defaced, the Secretary of State shall assign and attach to the vehicle a special number and maintain a record of the number. [PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]
2. Violation. A person commits a Class E crime if that person sells, exchanges, offers to sell or exchange, transfers or uses a manufacturer's vehicle identification or serial number plate that has been removed from the vehicle to which it was originally attached. [PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]
