location: Alabama my husband and i rent an apartment in a decently large complex. they only have one trash receptacle, a compactor that is near-constantly full or malfunctioning. they do not empty it on time, or repair it quickly when it is broken. there have been long stretches of time where it was down for whatever reason and there was no alternative offered. trash bags will regularly pile up until it is fixed and maintenance clears out the piled up garbage. there have been multiple days in a row where it is very visibly surrounded by trash bags. only once have they ever brought in a large trash disposal container as a temporary fix. once they ordered roofing to be redone. the roofers brought their own container, visibly similar to a trash container, and kept their supplies in there as well as their own garbage. it was not labeled, so tenants thought it was a new garbage bin and began throwing their bags in there when the compactor was malfunctioning. the workers raised a complaint with the management and they posted a sign, but nothing was done about the actual non-working compactor. today my husband and i went to go to the store and noticed they had placed a packet in our door frame. the first page was a snippet from the lease, where tenants agree to throw their trash away and agree to a fine if it is left outside any valid receptacle. the second page, and we laughed…

Hello all, I apologize if this is a stupid question, I just genuinely need some advice from someone smarter than me. I apologize for the length. Location: Alabama, United States TLDR: I moved out from my rental in February but continued to help my roommates in exchange for storage space, but they dropped the ball on move out cleaning and key return, causing a $1500 charge. Do I have any legal rights if we're taken to court since my name was on the lease? I moved out from a rental with myself and two other people in February due to my job relocating me for a promotion. I was the only one leaving the property, and foolishly did not request to have my name removed from the lease since I was going to continue using my old room for storage and such as I slowly moved to my new place, about an hour away. I continued to help with rent since these people were my friends and they couldn't afford to split 2 ways instead of 3. With my promotion, I could afford it. Location: I am in South Alabama. Today my boss called me into his office and said that I was going to get a raise. He stipulated however that if I tell anyone or if anyone comes into his office asking for a raise because they heard that I got a raise that I would be fired. We've had a back and forth before about talking about pay. He said before that talking about pay would lead to disciplinary actions and the last time that I was overlooked for a promotion I discussed pay with several of my coworkers and work got back to him and he was very unhappy about it. This time however he said very blatantly that he doesn't care if the law says it's illegal, that at this company if we discuss pay we will be terminated. Location: Alabama, USA. I rented an apartment in AL and signed a 18-month lease at the beginning of this year. Circumstances required me to leave the apartment early. Every apartment I've ever lived at in my life had the same policy: if you want to break the lease early, you keep paying rent each month until the owner finds a new tenant, at which point you are released from the lease and you owe nothing more. This apartment complex, however, has made this process difficult at every step of the way. At first, they flat-out refused to find another tenant at all, and said it was my job to find another tenant, not theirs (AL state law makes it clear, and even their own lease agreed, it was their job). I have a paper trail of emails with them proving their initial refusal. After some arguing, they have now agreed to consider my vacated and cleaned apartment available for their new tenants, but only after I pay the whole remaining lease term (10 months of rent) up-front, and then I will get a "credit" for the months remaining after a tenant has been found and leased the apartment. AL state law doesn't give detail about any circumstances in which an owner may refuse to make efforts to re-rent the apartment. None that apply to my situation, anyway.
