I first came to this country when I was 10 years old from India along with my family. At the time, I was far too young to know or appreciate the significance of the experience that I was facing. I knew only that I wanted to see snow.. Quickly as I moved, I realized that there were so many things that were new and different about the United States. I started asking questions about our own traditions and learning more deeply about myself and my heritage through these questions. Like many young immigrants, I was also bullied by some classmates. I decided to go to law school because to me, learning the law was very empowering. Through the legal system, we get the protections and the rights that are provided to each individual in the United States. However, until we learn it, it seems scary and difficult to comprehend. I wanted to understand the legal system to learn the rules of our country.. After graduating from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, I realized that I needed to help empower other immigrants who are also faced with the enormous challenge and possibilities opened by moving to a new and unfamiliar country.. To this day, it is this passion that drives me each and every day. Watching my clients succeed gives me strength. To this success, I am committed. I have always had an affinity for the immigrant experience. I'm sure it stemmed from the fact that I am a first-generation American and often heard stories of how my parents came to the United States. I saw, firsthand, the joys and struggles of my uncles, aunts, and cousins as they crossed over and adjusted to their new lives.. When the Bosnian crisis blew up, I was at the forefront, making calls, writing letters to legislators and volunteering my time at the first-ever Bosnian Refugee Center. My passion ignited, and I know this is what I wanted to do. I visited Pakistan and volunteered in Afghan refugee camps and interviewed trafficking victims at the International Human Rights Institute. I researched, learned from the best and persevered.. Like all good stories. my path was circuitous. I graduated from law school and instead of pursuing immigration law, I joined an estate planning law firm. I wanted to develop a good base outside of my comfort zone and still have time to pursue international human rights. I did both, even though they seemed to be polar opposites of each other. Now, my estate planning background has sustained my desire to help people. I counsel families on how best to protect their assets and provide for their beneficiaries.. And for my immigration clients, I advise them on the tremendous need for powers of attorneys and guardianship of minors in case they are ever removed from the United States. I do this while still advocating for them in removal cases, before ICE or USCIS and helping them gain the legal status they deserve.. I love speaking and writing about my fields of practice and consider it a privilege to learn from others while also empowering them to know their rights..
