Location: Texas Hi all, Dealing with a major problem. In July, I arrived in Texas and needed to find an apartment, but could not find one immediately, so I rented a room in a boarding house. I rented the room for six weeks. I rented it from an old man and his wife, so felt pretty comfortable with the situation. It wasn’t until I moved in, and a few weeks had passed, that I discovered there were some major issues. Firstly, it appears that the landlord’s son and his ex-girlfriend (both live in the house) are felons, and are using meth and cooking it in the house. Secondly, they have tried multiple times to steal my identity I believe – I caught them one day, taking photographs of the VIN and registration on my car, and given the fact that the female roommate is an identity thief, as I pulled up her Texas records after I suspected something was wrong, this makes me very concerned. Thirdly, she actually stole an item from me. I had to call the police to get the item back, and when we caught her dead to rights with the item because she can lie better than I can tell the truth, and the police still refused to give me the item when I pulled up a three year-old photograph of it, the police wouldn’t arrest her anyway because the police stated, and I quote “it’s not theft if she gives you the item back”. I have a house in Brooklyn New York. I have a tenant who hasn't paid rent in last 8 months, and I have started the process already with a lawyer. I just got a court date just now of December???? He moved in 9 months ago. My lawyer filed a case against him for non payment and he had to answer within 10 day by august, and tenant just replied and chose "Other: need time to pay". NOW the court date has been set for December. Please tell me if there is a way to get earlier court date. He has already lived here for 8 months without rent, he can't just live here for next 4-5 months too? He is also bothering the neighbors too and spreading trash which I am going and cleaning. I am paying mortgage and paying utilities too, please tell me if there is away to get earlier date? I am currently unemployed too. I can't afford him to stay for next 4 months. Location: upstate New York I've been experiencing covert harassment from a coworker for months, and much of it centers around my congenital anosmia. He's made a handful of insulting comments about it, but he's also told me to my face that he constantly feels the urge to mention whatever smells are around because of said anosmia. And indeed, he does mention smells all the damn time, sometimes multiple times a day, more than any person I have ever interacted with. I brought my concerns to my boss in early July, and he promised to speak to the guy. A month later I found out from another coworker that he never did. My boss also never followed up with me after our meeting, no clarity or communication about the situation, it just got dropped. My boss may have finally spoken to the guy sometime in the past week; he caught me crying and promised to do so yet again. But I'm not sure, my boss never told me if so, despite me requesting (by email) to be told when this conversation happens. And I have no confidence in whatever that conversation is or was, because of the initial month-long delay. I'm really unsure whether I've got enough evidence to prove harassment, and whether I've pushed back on the behavior enough to prove that it's "unwanted". Obviously this is what a lawyer would know. I'm 20 years old I’ve been working at my job for about 3 weeks. When I was hired, I signed a contract stating that my pay is $17 per hour. I normally work from 8 AM to 4 PM, but my boss recently asked me to stay until 6 PM to take out the garbage because that is the time it needs to be done to avoid a city violation/fine. The problem is that since my first week, I’ve only been receiving about $400 per week, instead of roughly $500 per week based on my regular hours and the $17/hour rate. My first payment was by check, but all the payments after that have been cash. Today my boss told me that the position I’m filling is a union position and that I’m currently on a 3-month probationary period. She said that after the 3 months I will start getting the rest of the money. She also said that right now I’m being paid as if I were covering someone’s vacation. The thing is, I am not in the union. I have not signed any union membership paperwork or any union agreement. Nobody explained to me before I started that my pay would be different during a probationary period. location: New York City, NY I've rented the same apartment for a little over four years. The refrigerator was already here when I moved in and is listed with the other landlord-provided appliances in my lease. A few days ago it stopped staying cold. The light still works and the compressor makes noise, but the inside is barely cooler than the room. I reported it to my landlord immediately. He sent someone to look at it, and the repair guy apparently told him it's an older unit and probably isn't worth repairing. My landlord then texted me saying he'll replace it, but I need to pay $725 toward the new refrigerator because "it was working when you moved in." I haven't damaged it, moved it, or done anything unusual with it. It just stopped cooling after being used normally. My lease says I'm responsible for damage caused by me or my guests, but I don't see anything saying I'm responsible when an appliance wears out. The landlord is arguing that since I've had exclusive use of the refrigerator for four years, replacing it is basically my responsibility. Is that actually how this works in New York? If the refrigerator belongs to the landlord and failed from age/normal use, can he require me to pay for the replacement?
