Jason spent the first twenty years of his career defending insurance companies and employers in disputes with injured workers. In his free time he enjoys playing golf, cooking, traveling and following the UNC Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers. Jason also has an affinity for Appalachian State University athletics due to the fact that his father and brother are both graduates of that institution and are ardent supporters of the Mountaineer football team.

Mr. Smith has had several high profile cases that have appeared in the news and he is frequently called upon by the media to provide insight for topics pertaining to the criminal justice system in North Carolina. He has spoken at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, and is a popular lecturer to various civic groups and other Charlotte organizations. J.
