I’m a proud, native North Carolinian. I grew up in Greensboro and got to attend UNC Chapel Hill for college. During those years, I was involved pretty heavily in my church, different community service groups, and soccer. After college, I went to Liberty University School of Law, passed the California bar exam, and joined a talent agency as an agent’s assistant in Los Angeles. After a few months in the position, I realized I wanted to practice law and live in the south. So, I moved back to North Carolina. Shortly after returning, I took the North Carolina bar exam and joined the NC State Bar. About a year and a half later, I met Matthew Weaver in Columbia, SC and we started this firm in Charlotte.. One of the primary reasons I started this firm was because I noticed, and wanted to help fight, a problem that happens every day in criminal law. I don’t know whether it’s systemic or reflects misplaced goals in our legal system but once you see someone go into the court system, you rarely see them get out. And so, as a criminal defense attorney, I set two goals for my firm. The first is fairly simple. If you’re innocent, Matthew and I will fight to keep you out of the system. The second is a bit more complicated and involves working with clients that are looking to right their wrong. That often involves pushing for sentences that promote rehabilitation instead of recidivism. So, I’m very interested in pushing toward creative sentencing in the NC courts, increasing rehabilitation opportunities, and limiting the need for incarceration. In 2004, Attorney Dexter Benoit started his legal career in Chicago after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Law. He focused on personal injury from the get-go, but at the time he primarily defended large medical institutions and insurance companies convicted of wrongdoing. In 1995, I began limiting my law practice to solely appellate work. I have since handled hundreds of appeals in the North Carolina Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. I am admitted to the United States Supreme Court, but it hears a very few cases and has yet to agree to grant any of the petitions that I have filed.. When the North Carolina State Bar created the Appellate Law specilization in 2011, I qualified and sat for the examination. As a result of passing that test and the other qualification requirements, I am a certified appellate specialist.. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law in 1983, I married criminal defense attorney Eben Rawls and moved to Charlotte. I started my law practice by doing research and writing for other lawyers on a contract basis. After a few months, I went into partnership with another lawyer. I was primarily responsible for the writing projects in our office, such as drafting motions and briefs, whether the underlying case was mine or my partner's. I worked as an Assistant District Attorney for approx. 12 that time I had approx 60 felony jury trials ranging from robbery, embezzlement,  rape and 1st degree murder.  My experience allows me to help those charged with serious criminal offenses find the best solutions for them, whether that means negotiating a lesser sentence or going to trial.

I work with my clients to help their families avoid litigation and to find the best possible solution for that client's particular situation.  I believe litigation is not an ideal solution for family law problems, because it discourages open truth-telling and encourages hostility and polarization.  Also, litigation is usually costlier and more time consuming than when parites use collaborative methods to resolve their differences.  The benefits of Collaborative family law methods are that the parties share information and work together to find areas of commonality and solutions that will benefit the whole family.  When parties use collaborative methods, the parties dictate the timing, not the courts, and the process is private.. I also work with parents in high conflict custody situations to decrease the hostility and to help those parents effectively co-parent their children. This type of work is know as Parent Coordination.  I am a certified Parent Coordinator.

I was injured in a car accident while a law student and learned the hard way how the insurance companies treat the victims who need their help the most. From that point on I put the practice of tax law behind me and decided to exclusively handle cases involving personal injury. I saw firsthand how the insurance companies treated people and knew that I could have a major impact on the lives of my clients.. I have been practicing injury law in North Carolina for over 20 years. I am married and have two sons (and three dogs). During my undergraduate career, I volunteered at homeless shelters.. I graduated from Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire, which is now University of New Hampshire School of Law.  I was the first female to graduate from Franklin Pierce Law Center in the dual degree Juris Doctor and Master of Law program in Intellectual Property, Commerce and Technology.  I participated in the school's Criminal and Commercial Clinical Law Programs, which allowed me to provide legal representation to indigent clients.  I enjoyed being a part of The New England Innocence Project and editing The Germenhausen Magazine.. I was born in Colombia, South America. Moved to Charlotte, NC from Miami Fl in 1999. I attended Western Carolina University and University of North Carolina Charlotte for my undergraduate degree.
