Cynthia Umphrey helps families and business owners make significant personal and professional life decisions. Ms. Umphrey calls upon over 20 years of experience in estate planning, post-death administration, business structuring and business exit planning to guide you through life’s most important choices.. Estate Planning & Post-Death Administration: Ms. Umphrey walks her clients through the entire estate planning process with care. Some concerns she will help you resolve include: how to set aside money and assets for your family, who should make decisions for you if you are incapacitated, and who should care for your children if you are unable to do so. She will ensure your future plans are followed as much as possible without court interference. She is well versed in the many and often detailed matters that need to be addressed after a death and handles highly complex federal estate tax and post-death business and family distribution matters.. Business Planning: Ms. Umphrey understands that business owners are faced with day-to-day questions as well as major quandaries. She handles everything from troubleshooting on employee or collections issues to engaging in strategic planning and protecting your family and business in the event of a death. Ms. Umphrey works proactively to create a plan that puts you in the best possible legal and financial position now and in the future.. Exit Planning: As an exit planning strategist, Ms. Umphrey helps owners of closely held businesses scale back their involvement, retire or transition their companies to new owners. Her transition plans allow owners to leave their businesses on their own terms and maximize the value received, or to keep their businesses as a source of income even as they retire. Techniques involved in this process can include: mediation of family issues; creation of incentives to key employees; tax advantaged sale or purchase of businesses; sophisticated gifting strategies; legal audit; and solving legal and tax problems before they become critical.

Aside from loving the work that I do and the help that I am able to offer my clients, my family, especially my children are my greatest joy. At ages 18 and 15, each day with them is a wonderful experience. Although maybe not politically a correct statement, I believe that my work as an attorney and the time my career forces me to spend apart from them actaully makes our relationship stronger. Despite my belief, my office is decorated in a colorful collection of 8 x 10 photos of my children, parents and friends.. On February 1, 2021, I opened the Law Office of Cris Wasserman. We practice employment law, unemployment benefits, personal injury and general contract rights and responsibilities. Since the very beginning of my career, I have sought to help people and opening my own firm allows me to do so, on my own terms. I am more excited about my future and my practice, than I have been in years.

Having at one time, myself, been homeless and befriended by the other homeless on the streets of Ann Arbor, I am equiped with a personal altruistic motivation to empathize with and assist in the defense of those who commit crimes out of frustration or desperation.. Taken under the wing of friends, clergy, and lawyers, while I was unemployed and homeless, I was hired to work as a law clerk for the Honorable Barry L. Howard who assisted my entry into law school. Educated under the strict guidance of the Jesuits at the University of Detroit School of Law, and guided by the tutelage of Constitutional Law Professor Patrick Keenan while there, as well as trained by Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins in criminal trial practice while I was a student at Pepperdine University Law School in Malibu, California, I was ultimately able to obtain one of the highest scores ever recorded on the essay portion of the Michigan bar examination.. I enjoy the work that I do, because of both the intellectual as well as the emotional challenges involved. In my spare time, I study the talmud, run marathons, and enjoy painting as a fine art.
