Kaitlyn J. Andren is a partner at Terzich & Ort, LLP, who devotes her practice exclusively to family law. She brings a thoughtful and practical approach to helping clients with a wide range of family law issues, including divorce, legal separation, physical custody, legal custody, parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance, property division, debt allocation, paternity, contempt, domestic abuse, harassment, and step-parent adoption.. Before joining Terzich & Ort, LLP, in 2019, Kaitlyn developed her family law practice while working for several years as a family law attorney at another small family law firm. Kaitlyn also worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Edward T. Wahl at the Family Justice Center in Hennepin County and worked as a Special Assistant County Attorney in the family law division of the Anoka County Attorney’s Office. Kaitlyn’s previous positions allowed her to gain meaningful experience handling family law issues and develop first-hand knowledge of the court system and the judicial decision-making process.. Kaitlyn also practices family law at the appellate level. She wrote a brief as amicus curiae with Standpoint (MN) in support of appellant’s position in Pooley v. Pooley, A20-1250 (Minn. 2022), which was a case regarding omitted assets in a divorce. The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of appellant, which was a huge victory for making sure financially abusive spouses are prevented from forcing their victims to agree to extremely inequitable divisions of property while leaving them no recourse to challenge those divisions.. Kaitlyn also helped a client successfully appeal an Order for Protection matter in 2018. In re the Matter of Hansen v. Richter, A17-1063 (Minn. Ct. App. 2018) (nonprecedential opinion).. Kaitlyn is nationally ranked in the Top 10 Under 40 for excellence in the field of family law by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys.. Kaitlyn has earned consistent recognition as being among the top 2.5% of lawyers in her region, and she has received “Excellent” client ratings on Avvo along with the site’s Clients’ Choice Award. She is honored for her outstanding professionalism and stellar client service.. Kaitlyn has been selected as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers® publication every year since 2021. While up to five percent of the lawyers in Minnesota are named to Super Lawyers®, no more than two and a half percent are named to the Rising Stars list.. Kaitlyn has also been recognized as a North Star Lawyer by the Minnesota State Bar Association for providing at least 50 hour of pro bono legal services to low-income individuals at no fee and without expectation of a fee.. Kaitlyn earned her Bachelor of Arts from Gustavus Adolphus College and her Juris Doctor from the University of St. Thomas School of Law. She is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Hennepin County Bar Association (Family Law Section), the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), the Family Law League, and Minnesota Women Lawyers. In addition, Kaitlyn serves as a volunteer attorney and is a Qualified Neutral under Rule 114 of the Minnesota General Rules of Practice.. Kaitlyn serves as a Class Engagement Officer to the University of St. Thomas School of Law Class of 2015. She also serves as a mentor to a law student at the University of St. Thomas School of Law through their Mentor-Externship program each year. In addition, Kaitlyn volunteers as a mentor to an undergrad student at Gustavus Adolphus College through the Gustavus Mentoring program each year.. Practice Areas: Class Action
Kai H. Richter is an experienced attorney who has fought for the rights of everyday people throughout his legal career. As a member of Nichols Kaster’s Consumer Class Action Team, he is currently handling a number of cases on behalf of consumers who have been victimized by unfair, deceptive and unlawful trade practices.. Prior to joining Nichols Kaster in April 2010, Kai managed the Complex Litigation Division of the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, where he supervised and handled a large number of consumer enforcement cases. For example, in June and September of 2009, Kai co-chaired a three-week trial involving claims for fraudulent sales of annuities and legal plans to over 1,200 Minnesota senior citizens, and won a favorable judgment from the trial court. In addition, he also spearheaded a significant enforcement action against Sprint Nextel relating to wrongfully-imposed contracts and early termination fees.. Kai also has several years of prior experience representing plaintiffs in private practice, including two landmark class actions. For example, in Braun v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., a statewide wage and hour class action against Wal-Mart, Kai briefed and successfully co-argued the issue of class certification and significantly participated in the three-month trial of the case, paving the way for a multi-million dollar payout to Wal-Mart’s Minnesota workers. In addition, Kai was one of only three plaintiff trial attorneys in Grutter v. Bollinger, a landmark class action lawsuit against the University of Michigan Law School that was decided by the United States Supreme Court in 2003.. Kai received his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1999 and received a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1995. He also has taught legal writing at Hamline University and previously served as a co-director of the Robert F. Wagner Moot Court Program at the University of Minnesota Law School.

My love for immigrants and diverse cultures started as a child when my family hosted exchange students from Guatemala, Mexico and France. As a 15 year old I was fortunate to travel to the former Soviet Union with an exchange program aimed at promoting peace through cultural understanding. That experience broadened my perspective and provided me with a global outlook that I carry with me to this day. In law school, I participated in an Asylum Law Project representing a young Honduran boy who was being deported. That experience solidified my commitment to immigration law. I have worked with many clients from around the world and truly enjoy learning about their lifestyle and culture. I couldn't ask for a better job.
