My legal career has been devoted entirely to bankruptcy law, insolvency, and debt issues. What fuels me is to help struggling individuals and businesses either (1) obtain a fresh start, (2) reorganize to increase chances of success, or (3) gain knowledge on how to achieve better financial success.. I also have a passion helping those who can't afford legal advice, so I also contribute a large portion of my time to local legal aid organizations and clinics that help assist lower-income earners and retired veterans. In 2018, I was awarded the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award for the over 30 clients I assisted through either direct representation or clinic advice that year.. Some of the clinics in which I've participated are the following: (For more information, see the following link: ?pg=UpcomingLegalClinicsforPublic). For any attorneys that view my page, I encourage each and every one of you to reach out to your local bar association and become as involved as your time allows. There are many deserving clients in your local area that lack representation, and your time could help change a life.

Kevin W. Shepherd, Attorney At Law. For most people, legal issues are stressful and confusing. They must make the most important decisions of their lives without truly understanding their legal rights, which may have changed recently due to the alteration of local, state and federal laws. I chose a career in law specifically because of a strong desire to provide hands-on care to people who often feel powerless to protect their rights in stressful circumstances.. I am Maryville attorney Kevin W. Shepherd. After beginning my legal career working in the office of the District Attorney and as a Public Defender, I learned that the people in my community needed individualized legal support. I founded my law firm to meet that need.. During my more than 20 years of legal experience, I learned that the community needs legal support for individual and family issues. A large part of my practice focuses on family law and personal injury law, but each client has unique needs and concerns. I establish a close, long-term, first-name relationship with my clients. My clients know they can ask questions at any time, and they trust me to treat their legal issues with honesty and integrity. This is why so many individuals I have worked with send new clients my way through enthusiastic referrals.. As founder of a Maryville personal injury and divorce law firm, I believe in using my skills and knowledge to advocate for the rights of individuals and families. My two other areas of focus are my family and the education of other attorneys and the public about the law. I also served as the elected county commissioner for eight years, and believe in the importance of community involvement.. When you face legal issues, you need an attorney who provides compassionate guidance and information needed to make informed decisions comfortably and without undue anxiety. Kevin grew up in rural East Tennessee. His parents divorced when he was nine years old, but continued to feud throughout the remainder of his childhood, giving him unique insight into the needs of Family Law clients. As a result of that divorce, Kevin changed schools multiple times before eventually graduating from Central High School in Wartburg, Tennessee.. In his youth, Kevin had more than a few run-ins with The Law, and developed his desire to practice law partially as a result of having hired bad attorneys or having to represent himself because he couldn’t afford an attorney.. Preferring work to school, Kevin spent several years working as a lineman before going to college. He started that career as a ditch-digger on a buried cable placement crew. From there, he advanced to lineman, then to inspector, and finally to design engineer.. Looking to travel, Kevin took the jobs that no one else wanted, in places no one else wanted to go. He dug ditches, swung hammers, and climbed poles & towers. He created maps and digital models. He planned utility systems.. Kevin traveled the nation building those utility systems. Doing so, he developed the skills that placed him on the team that designed the fastest internet in the world for Chattanooga’s EPB.. That, however, was not his calling. Kevin always wanted to practice law. After their children finished school, Kevin and his wife decided it was time for him to pursue that career. So, Kevin left his job with the Electric Power Board, and entered law school.. Kevin is the only graduate of The University of Tennessee College of Law on record to complete both the Concentration in Business Transactions and the Concentration in Advocacy & Dispute Resolution. To accomplish this, Kevin carried a full load every semester, took summer classes, did an independent study, and used seasonal and holiday breaks to study.. During law school, Kevin served as a clerk for U.S. District Judge Clifton Corker and for Chief Bankruptcy Judge Marcia Parsons, both in Greeneville, TN.. After law school, Kevin joined a Chattanooga-based firm where he spent a decade representing and consulting with a wide variety of clients.. In January of 2025, with the intention of providing better representation at a lower cost, Kevin left that firm to start his own. That is how Hargis Law came to be.. Kevin’s blue-collar background and lived experiences give him the ability to better relate to our clients and understand their needs. He strives to provide zealous representation at a reasonable cost.. Text Hargis Law at to schedule a consultation. Feel free to text any day, any time, and we will respond as soon as we are available!. Kevin currently limits his litigation practice to East Tennessee courts, where he practices Criminal Defense and Family Law.. This geographical limit does not apply to his transactional practice, and he handles Wills, POAs, Advanced Healthcare Directives (aka Living Wills), Business Entity Formation, and Trademark work for folks outside of the East Tennessee area as well as for those within it.

Kevin's logo dervies from the Turner Cross, a German insignia featuring four opposing letters F standing for words roughly translated to English as cheerful, hardy, godfearing, and free. While an attorney is ethically obligated to be the best possible advocate for his client, it is important to do so in a principled manner. The "four f's" are principles that Kevin has adopted for life and legal practice.. Affiliations
