Practice Areas: Estate Planning
I have the best job in the world. Every day, I meet with wonderful people who love their families, and want to protect their loved ones, keep them out of court, save money, and make things easier for them in the future. Our estate plans enable our clients to help avoid unnecessary placement in nursing homes. This alone can save up to $7500 every month, while allowing the clients to preserve their privacy, dignity and quality of life by remaining in their own homes as long as possible. In the unlikely event that nursing home care IS required, our estate plans contain the tools necessary to do Medicaid Planning. Typically, this allows the client to qualify for medicaid much more quickly, without having to SPEND DOWN everything they have been working for their entire lives. All we do at Rice & Rice is estate planning, and we have been practicing law for almost 42 years.. I am extremely proud of the people who work together with us at Rice & Rice. One of our paralegals started working with us 40 years ago; another 38 years ago; another 27 years ago. All of these people have a wealth of experience, and have been doing primarily only estate planning for many decades.. I am also Co-Pastor at our local church, and we own and operate a Christian radio station which has been on the air 24 hours a day for the past 10 years.

Craig has 28 years of experience in personal injury law. He attended The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and graduated in 1984. Craig worked as a bailiff and law clerk in Elkhart, Indiana for the Honorable Donald Jones and the Honorable Stephen Platt while preparing for the bar exam.. After passing the bar exam, Craig joined the Law Offices of Charles C. Wicks. After several years, the firm became Wicks and Rieff. Craig handled primarily personal injury cases, but also did family law and estate planning.. In addition, Craig was Deputy County Prosecutor in the Elkhart City Court. In 1989, he joined Gonderman Legal Corporation. The firm later became known as Gonderman & Rieff. Craig practiced exclusively in the area of personal injury litigation handling auto collision, slip and fall, medical malpractice and other types of civil litigation. While there, he worked on several significant cases. Among those were cases resulting in settlements of $8.5 million and $5.9 million. One of the most satisfying cases Craig was involved in was the tragic case of a woman who was beaten to death by her husband in front of her two young children. The husband had been provided a weekend pass from prison and the state failed to notify the woman as they had agreed to do. Although state law did not permit recovery for the children at the time, we were able to convince the governor to pay the two claims. The firm took no fees on those two claims.. The firm handled numerous other significant cases which resulted in significant recoveries for the injured client. In 2007, Craig left Gonderman & Rieff and joined Sweeney Julian, where he practiced personal injury law exclusively. Craig enjoys the satisfaction that comes with making sure that his clients receive fair compensation for the injuries they have suffered.. Craig wrote an article for Trial Lawyers Association entitled “Landowner’s Liability for Obstructing the View of Motorists on Adjacent Public Roads” which was recently published in the Verdict Magazine. In addition to practicing in the area of personal injury, he has also completed mediation training and serve as a mediator in disputes involving personal injury. He also served as a judge for the local high school Moot Court program.. Craig was born in Mishawaka and is a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Mishawaka High School and attended Indiana University at South Bend where he graduated with a degree in History in 1981. Craig is married to the former Laura Pabst who is a licensed realtor with Cressy and Everett.. Craig has been active in community activities over the years. He coached baseball at both the Clay Junior Baseball Association and at Chet Wagner Little League for a period of about ten years. He also coached both boy’s baseball and basketball for four years at Christ the King grade school. He also helped coach the girls’ soccer team at Christ the King.. Craig and Laura donate to various local and national charities including the Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County, St. Margaret’s House, The Woman’s Care Center, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The Humane Society, Smile Train, The St. Joseph County Food Bank, The Center for the Homeless and the USO.

I hail from Long Island. I met my future wife, Maria, in the corridors of Sachem High School. Later, after spending four years at Rutgers—where I earned my undergraduate degree and a varsity letter as a member of the Heavyweight Crew—Maria and I moved to South Bend so I could attend law school at Notre Dame. Indiana’s been our home ever since.. During my time at Notre Dame, I worked at the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic, became a big brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters, won the American Bar Association Negotiation Award, and Maria had the first of our three children.. After joining Jones Obenchain, LLP in 1998, I became a partner in 2003. I'm a saavy commercial and business litigator with experience in state, federal, and appellate courts. I represent individuals and businesses in contract disputes, employment matters, tort claims, and insurance-coverage disputes. My well-known clients have included the likes of American Family Mutual Insurance Company, GEICO, Meridian Title Corporation, the State of Indiana, the Indiana Department of Corrections, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.. But my day doesn’t end when the courthouse closes. I served for many years on the Boards of Directors for the St. Joseph County’s Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka programs. I remain involved with the latter’s alumni association committee, and was recently elected to serve as a commissioner on the 2013-2014 Michiana High School Hockey League board.. Because of my professional accomplishments and volunteer work, the Tribune Business Weekly recognized me as a “Rising Star” in the local business community. I was later selected for inclusion in the inaugural Michiana Forty Under 40 Class. Forty Under 40 is a collaborative project involving the regional Chambers of Commerce, Elkhart Truth, South Bend Tribune, Bethel College, and a number of major employers intended to recognize and honor 40 young professionals from north-central Indiana for their contribution and accomplishments in the workplace and the community.. Since 2011, I've been putting my litigation experience to good use by training a new generation of lawyers. I'm now an assistant adjunct professor of law at Notre Dame, where I teach in the deposition skills course, which is part of the university’s trial-advocacy curriculum. I also coached an all-freshmen mock-trial team from John Adams High School to a 21st-place finish in a statewide competition.

I am a life-long resident of Northwest Indiana and I attended Valparaiso University's Law School. I have been practicing law for 7 years and worked as a deputy prosecuting attorney before opening my law firm. That means I have a lot of courtroom experience and will be comfortable being Your Voice in court. I have practiced law in Lake County, Porter County, LaPorte County, Jasper County, Starke County & Tippecanoe County throughout my career.. The benefit of being a former deputy prosecuting attorney is that I have significant trial experience. In 2024 I went to trial on six (6) murder cases, as well as completed other trials in my career. This means I know how to present complex legal issues before a jury when representing my clients. This trial experience helps give me a competitive edge in negotiating cases on behalf of my clients - both criminal and personal injury cases. However, if we (my client and myself) do not believe negotiations are going the way we like, then we will go to trial to present the case we believe in to a jury and/or judge.. Every case is different. Every case deserves the highest level of due diligence. When I take on a new case, I review every piece of evidence so that I can give you informed legal advice. I also believe in a patient approach where I will take the time to answer all of your questions. My goal is to make sure you know how your case will impact your life, that means: Career impact, driving privileges, right to own a firearm, etc. We will decide how to proceed on your case as a team once we have gone over the facts and evidence of your case.
