After a successful tenure in criminal prosecution, Akiah joined Herndon, Coleman, Brading & McKee in November, 2021. He grew up on a farm in a rural part of Hawkins County. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering Technology from East Tennessee State University, he graduated with honors from Appalachian School of Law.. His legal career started in general practice working with the now Chancellor Douglas Jenkins in 2013. He then accepted a position as an Assistant District Attorney for the Third Judicial District, where he worked for seven years. While at the District Attorney’s Office, Akiah was promoted to Lead Assistant for the Hawkins and Hancock County offices and handled a diverse caseload ranging from First Degree Murder and other serious felonies to misdemeanor assaults and DUIs. He has handled thousands of cases and has extensive experience in the courtroom and at the negotiating table. He has also served as a Board member for Hawkins County Recovery Court and Chaired the Elder Abuse Task Force for the Third Judicial District. Akiah was also selected as a member of the Business Journal's 2021 class of 40 Under Forty.. In his free time, Akiah enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, hiking and enjoying the outdoors, and is an avid ETSU Bucs and Tennessee Vols sports fan.. I was born in Chicago Illinois, and had a great childhood in Chicago in a large family. When I graduated high school I worked three years in a steel mill while attending college part-time. I eventually joined the military to finish my schooling on the GI bill. In the Army, I worked as an operating room technician (handing the surgical instruments to the surgeon) for 3 and 1/2 years in a military hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii (a wonderful assignment as you might expect). As planned, I finished schooling after I left the military, and the GI bill funded my tuition all the way through law school at Southern Illinois University. I am forever grateful that I was afforded that luxury that so many others are not. Upon my graduation from law school in 1986, I returned to the U.S. Army as a JAGC attorney, where I practiced as a criminal defense attorney at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky for three years. Upon my discharge in 1990, I entered private practice first in Nashville, Tennesseee for three years, then in Chattanooga, where I have remained for the past 20 years. I love Chattanooga, and I am very impressed with the legal history and traditions of our town, and the first rate judiciary our town seems to consistently produce. Having worked in so many other jurisdictions, I am keenly aware how lucky Chattanooga is to have such a friendly, competent bar, and fair, concerned judges. My staff and I try our best to honor and uphold the high standards of the Hamilton County courts, and we will do our best to help every client that puts their faith in us.
